Mission Appeal Weekend The Church in Ghana

 In Articles

Every year, we are given the opportunity to listen to the experience of the Church in different parts of the world.  We hear about their successes, struggles and needs.  This weekend, Fr. Paul Prince Appiah-Kubi, SVD, who serves in the archdiocese of Los Angeles,  is our Mission Appeal Speaker and will talk to us about the Diocese of Wiaso in Ghana. Below is the description of the diocese and how we can help the Church in that area.

The Catholic Diocese of Wiawso was created out of Sekondi- Takoradi diocese in Ghana on December 22, 1999. It’s first Bishop, Most Rev. Joseph Francis Kweku Essien was consecrated on March 25, 2000. The current Bishop is Most Rev. Samuel Nkuah Boateng who was consecrated on April 21, 2023.

The diocese is located in the Western North of Ghana. It is a rural area. Demographically, it has a population of 880, 855. The number of baptized Catholics is 52, 306 and all other Christians being 64, 052.

Seventy percent of the people in this diocese are farmers. Cocoa is the notable cash crop. The average annual income in the diocese is about $1,000. Daily minimum wage is about $1.40.

The rate of poverty in this diocese is high, which is also coupled with higher rate of unemployment. The way out is the empowerment of the youth through education and skill training programs. It is the vision of the bishop to set up skill training centers for the Youth to reduce unemployment

The mission appeal will help to empower the children and most especially the youth in the diocese through education and acquiring Vocational skills.

The bishop also would like to provide mechanized boreholes for some of the villages in the diocese who do not have access to portable drinking water.

Your generous giving will make difference in the lives of the young people in the diocese of Wiawso in Ghana.  Thank you.

God bless,

Fr. Paul Prince Appiah-Kubi
