Scrutinies

 In Living the Liturgy

The scrutinies, which are solemnly celebrated on Sundays and are reinforced by rites of self-searching and repentance, have above all a spiritual purpose.  The scrutinites are meant to uncover and bring healing, both physically and spiritually, and strengthen all that is upright, strong and good.  The scrutinites are celebrated to give the elect the strength of Christ, who is the way, the truth and the life.  These rites, therefore, should complete the conversion of the elect and deepen their resolve to hold fast to Christ and to carry out their decision to love God above all.

Because the elect are asking for the three sacraments of initiation, they must have the intention of achieving an intimate knowledge of Christ and His Church and they are expected particularly to progress in genuine self-knowledge.

Here at Holy Spirit Parish, we will celebrate the scrutinies at the following Masses:

First ScrutinyMarch 20 at 9:30 am

Second ScrutinyMarch 27 at 11:30 am

Third ScrutinyApril 2 at 5:00 pm

If you attend one of these Masses, the Scripture readings will be taken from Cycle “A”.  These Gospels are chosen to reflect the symbols of the initiation sacraments, namely water, light and life.
