Holy Spirit has partnered with Our Lady of Refuge in South-East San Jose since it was founded in 2011. OLR is now well established and thriving, and we continue our partnership with their community by volunteering to help with their ESL and Food Bank programs.
Help teach English as a second language at any of our Monday through Thursday classes. Classes are held from 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Refuge located at 2165 Lucretia Ave, San Jose (between Tully and Story Road).
We are looking for volunteers who are able to commit one evening per week to help teach English to very enthusiastic adult students. Lesson plans have been created and each section has a lead volunteer. We need additional volunteers to help the students practice correct pronunciation and listening skills. No prior experience needed.

Nowhere in scripture is our call to action more clear than when Jesus reveals that we are really serving Him when we feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty or welcome the stranger. And nowhere is there a better opportunity to answer the call to action on all three fronts than to join the team of people, under the direction of Teresa McCarthy, who distribute food at Our Lady of Refuge on the second Wednesday of the month from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Holy Spirit has been joining with the parishioners of Our Lady of Refuge to distribute fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, eggs and dry staples provided by the Second Harvest Food Bank for over 3 years. It is a beautiful experience to meet Jesus in those we find in the receiving line each month.
