Sacred Heart Community Service is a non-denominational, non-profit organization which provides integrated services onsite free of charge to all in need. The programs offered are in three main categories: Essential Services (food, clothing, housing, and utility assistance), Self Sufficiency (education, family support, and employment), and Policy and Organization (training low income volunteers to work together to address the needs of their community).
Holy Spirit Parish supports and volunteers for many of the programs at Sacred Heart. Below is a list of ongoing and current opportunities to serve.
We gather on the first and third Thursdays of the month to distribute Survival Sacks, organize supplies, make hygiene kits, and fill backpacks. Sacks are distributed to those who are homeless and living on the streets of San Jose, usually about 50 on each distribution day.
Consider joining us on either November 1st and/or November 15th. We meet at Sacred Heart at 8:45 a.m. and finish up about 10:45 a.m.
For questions, please contact Tom Burgei and Patty O’Neil at email@example.com.
School aged children and older are invited to join us for our next Saturday at Sacred Heart on Saturday, October 20th, 9:00 a.m. to Noon. We will help in the Food Pantry and Clothes Closet, and anywhere else we are needed to help Sacred Heart prepare to serve their customers in the week ahead.

Hope to see you at The Heart!

Pack-a-Back 2018 is Here!
Every fall, Sacred Heart distributes backpacks filled with supplies to children who would not otherwise have the materials they need to start the school year. The gift of a supply-filled backpack allows children to begin school ready to learn. Filled backpacks today nurture the leaders of tomorrow. This year, Sacred Heart will give out 3,300 backpacks! Holy Spirit Parish has generously supported the Pack a Back campaign over the years.
You and your family can be part of this important ministry by donating school supplies and/or volunteering with Holy Spirit Parish at Sacred Heart.
We will be collecting new school supplies at all Masses the weekends of July 14th and 21st. Bins will also be available in the Parish Hall and Parish Office for donations during the week. A list of needed items is listed to the right.
In addition to donations, we have the following volunteer opportunities:
July 28th, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Sorting Day: Sorting school supplies, followed by food or clothing help in warehouse. Volunteer release required for youth under 18 (download below). Youth under 13 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.

Every Thanksgiving, Sacred Heart strives to give a blanket to each of their families. Donated blankets are one of the most popular items in their Clothes Closet. They are used to bring warmth to several children sharing the same bed, shelter for homeless men and women living outside in the rain and cold, or families trying to keep warm while living in a car.
Unfortunately, the number of families in need exceeds the number of donated blankets. We’re calling on you to help meet the needs of as many families as possible this year. So, when you’re out shopping or running errands think about picking up a blanket or two to warm the hearts and toes of those in need. Any gently used blankets tucked away in closets at home will also be greatly appreciated by those in need of a warm night’s rest.
We will be collecting new and/or clean, gently used blankets on the weekends of October 20th-21st and October 27th-28th at all Masses. Please consider giving the gift of warmth to our brothers and sisters in need.
Thank you for living your faith by sharing your generous spirit.
“…It is more blessed to give than to receive.” ― Acts 20:35
The Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons are opportunities for us to celebrate the good gifts God has given us. For many, the holiday season is a special time to serve the poor and to share our blessings with those who need it. We have an opportunity to do a small thing by sharing a turkey dinner or providing tarps for those in need.
Each year Sacred Heart Community Service feeds a turkey dinner to over 10,000 people with the help of $20 donations received from Holy Spirit parishioners. Last year, we raised over $10,500. In the past 11 years the parish has generously raised over $110,000 to support those in need at Sacred Heart. Also, last year we purchased over 320 tarps to support our neighbors who do not have adequate or available shelter from the cold and rain the winter months bring.
We are looking for two to three people after each Mass to help accept donations for turkeys and tarps on the weekends of November 3-4 and 10-11. Volunteers must be 15 years or older; community service available.
If you have any questions, please contact Joyce Nguyen at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Open your hearts during the holidays and help at Sacred Heart Community Service. Many hands, large and small, are needed to volunteer for their Thanksgiving and Christmas programs.
For Thanksgiving, come join your fellow parishioners to help fill food boxes to the brim with ingredients for Thanksgiving dinners. After helping stack hundreds of filled boxes, you can also volunteer to help distribute food to customers for their families to enjoy holiday meals. It is truly an experience that will make your own Thanksgiving time meaningful.
During the Christmas holiday time, food boxes are once again put together and distributed for those in need. And a special tradition is Sacred Heart’s TOYBOX. The Learning Center will be transformed with hundreds and hundreds of brand new unwrapped toys where customers will choose toys to surprise their children for Christmas celebrations. Be part of putting a smile on a child’s face!
These are wonderful ways in which you and your family can give the most precious gift of all…the gift of time Please look over the various shifts, paying close attention to the age requirements. Signups will open on the church website on October 29th, so don’t wait!!! The spots go very quickly. Remember one spot per person. You must sign up every person who is participating. If you have any questions, please contact Mary Jane Vitkovich at email@example.com.
